The process that turns adipocytes into metabolically active fat may be inhibited by the vitamin D receptor, but eliminating the receptor leads to adipocyte browning, Stanford University researchers reported on the website of Molecular Endocrinology. Research shows brown fat may be a mechanism for treating obesity, but Dr. Christoph Buettner at Mount Sinai Hospital cautioned that this study involves only the vitamin D receptor and that vitamin D itself probably will not increase energy expenditure to help people lose weight.
