CDC researchers looked at more than 2,500 sixth- to 12th-graders in Orange County, N.Y., during a 2009 mumps outbreak. All of the students had received two doses of mumps-containing vaccine, but 320 of them were still affected by the outbreak. Multiple, prolonged and intense exposure to the virus during outbreaks may render the vaccine ineffective, according to the study published in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal.
