An Ocean City, N.J., intermediate school last year started using a nine-period schedule, which principal Geoff Haines says has improved collaboration and allows students and teachers to spend more time together. Among other things, the schedule allows blocks for social studies and science classes, providing a 90-minute double period every other day for each course -- giving teachers more time for experiments, to expand on lessons and to collaborate and co-teach with fellow teachers, Haines said.
