Freight carload traffic on U.S. railroads dropped 1.5% in the week ending Sept. 21 compared with the year-ago level, but intermodal rose 3.4%, according to the Association of American Railroads. Shipments of petroleum and petroleum products climbed 8%, the largest gain among six of the 10 carload categories that posted increases. Overall U.S. traffic for the latest week was up 0.8% year-on-year, AAR noted.
