Defiance of state bans on marriage equality is the most feasible way to advance LGBT rights in the South, Jasmine Beech-Ferrara argues in an Advocate op-ed. Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality, advocates for small acts of defiance by same-sex couples living in Southern states, such as listing partners as spouses on state forms, as well as for public officials in these states to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. "By directly confronting a discriminatory law, we make visible a reality that LGBT people live with daily and that more people need to understand," Beach-Ferrara writes.
