The use of the RT-PCR TaqMan low-density array test showed a 94% specificity in detecting respiratory viral infections in patients and helped spot actual infections around 89% of the time, researchers reported in Science Translational Medicine. "This is important not only in viral pandemics where infection may be caused by unknown viruses but also in routine care where the decision to treat or not with antibiotics is paramount," said Aimee Zaas, first author of the study.
