A federal court has ruled that a company that changed its IP address to circumvent a ban on accessing a website violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The ruling is the first to interpret the statute intended to apply to hackers. Hanni Fakhoury, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which filed an amicus brief, takes issue with the decision, saying the law requires an actual breach of a technological barrier, rather than simply masking an IP address.
