Indiana University research showed an emergency department alert system that notified a heart failure team, made up of nurses and physicians, reduced readmission rates because heart failure patients were more likely to be held for a 24-hour observation period. The study presented at the Heart Failure Society of America annual meeting detailed the alert system used at Indiana University-Methodist Hospital, which had implemented other initiatives to reduce readmissions but still had a lot of single-day stays.
