The government of Ecuador has ended a 0.7% levy on banana exports that began in 1994 to support the National Banana Program and was diverted four years later to a highway rebuilding program. The tax had totaled between $12 million and $15 million annually, said Eduardo Ledesma, executive director of the Association of Ecuadorian Banana Exporters. "This is something that is totally favorable for the industry because it enables more liquidity for the export sector and fewer costs for Ecuadorian bananas."
