The Common Core State Standards are here to stay, asserts Joanne Yatvin, a retired teacher and administrator. In this commentary, Yatvin writes that the best thing for her and other critics of the national standards can do is to work to improve the common core -- rather than fight against what she calls a "risky experiment." To get the ball rolling on changes, Yatvin has identified several problems and offers possible solutions to issues she sees in the standards for English-language arts, including what she says is an overreach in some cases into dictating teaching methods.
