New drug labeling standards issued Tuesday by the FDA urge prescribers to use increased caution with long-acting and extended-release opioid painkillers. A boxed warning will highlight risks of use while pregnant, and new language will indicate the drugs should be reserved for severe pain. The steps are intended "to combat the crisis of misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose and death from these potent drugs that have harmed too many patients and devastated too many families and communities," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg said.
