A study in the journal Nature found the gene for glycine amidinotransferase may be linked to muscle pain related to the use of statin medications among patients being treated for cholesterol levels. GATM plays a role in synthesizing creatine, and researchers said study participants who reported pain after taking statins had differing levels of creatine in their muscles than those who did not report pain.
