High-school students in an Iowa town are learning core subjects by solving real-world problems in their community. The students, for example, will learn statistics by taking a survey of people in the community and plotting data on a map. The program also focuses on science, English and history. "Students move through these classes as a cohesive unit, working on real-world problems while learning the skill sets needed in each subject area to address the problem and develop solutions," said Julie Carter, an English teacher at Crestwood High School.
