NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq OMX Group are reportedly considering a plan, in connection with other exchanges, to institute backups for each other's pricing data, people familiar with the situation said. The plan comes after Mary Jo White, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, told exchanges to collaborate to prevent technological glitches.
Privately held companies have grown an average annual rate of 3.8% in 2013, according to a Sageworks estimate, compared with more than 9% growth in each of the previous two years. "Business owners will be even less likely to add to overhead and to take on new employees if their sales aren't growing at the tremendous rates we've seen in the past," says analyst Libby Bierman.
CFOs at midsize companies are seeing a larger pay raise than CEOs, according to a study by BDO USA. Compensation for CFOs in the retail, real estate, energy and banking sectors increased between 6% and 18% last year, while CEO compensation ranged from a 1% decrease to an 11% gain. CFOs' growing strategic role is driving the increase, the study says.
Coca-Cola's deal with Subway has caused it to lose a 23-year-old contract with Quiznos, making room for PepsiCo to step in. Pepsi, which lost its Subway account to Coke last year, will begin selling its carbonated and noncarbonated drinks at the Quiznos sandwich chain early next year.
