The demand for mechanical engineers has been rising 6% a year since 2010, and employers report difficulties finding qualified candidates. Currently, only 19 prospects typically apply for every 100 openings advertised. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that "mechanical engineers should experience demand in architectural, engineering and related services as companies continue to hire temporary engineering services as a cost-cutting measure rather than keeping engineers on staff. Mechanical engineers will also be involved in various manufacturing industries -- specifically, transportation equipment and machinery manufacturing."
