The U.S. needs to develop a central repository for the increasing stockpile of used fuel at nuclear plants and high-level radioactive waste from the defense program, writes C.T. Carley, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at Mississippi State University. Mississippi could help resolve the issue by agreeing to host a deep-geologic repository, Carley writes. "We need to move in a deliberate way to make that happen," he writes.
