Physicians often struggle with care decisions for seriously ill patients, but more health care facilities are encouraging end-of-life care conversations, which could lead to more palliative care. From a financial standpoint, said Scripps Health president and CEO Chris Van Gorder, increasing palliative care services will save money due to costs that are avoided not because of reimbursements, which lag for the specialty. In addition to cutting care costs, palliative care extends lives and tailors treatment to patients' goals, said Dr. R. Sean Morrison, director of the National Palliative Care Research Center.
