A review in the journal Pediatrics revealed 50% to 88% of younger patients with chronic conditions do not take drugs as prescribed. Researchers also found children and teens with asthma who did not or rarely filled prescriptions were more likely to visit the emergency department than those who had at least half of their prescriptions refilled. "The results of this study have implications for children, their parents and their health care providers. In all, multi-disciplinary approaches to adherence promotion are an important part of providing optimal medical care," said lead author Meghan McGrady.
