A report in JAMA Internal Medicine revealed about 440,000 adult inpatients contract one of the top five hospital-acquired infections in the U.S. annually. Researchers also found that these HAIs cost the country an estimated $9.8 billion per year, with a third of the costs associated with surgical site infections, a quarter linked to ventilator-related pneumonia and another 25% tied to catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
