Specialty physicians, who often work at large group practices, and "must-have" hospitals with good reputations in convenient locations command the highest prices because they have the strongest bargaining position, according to a study of private claims data. Representatives from some high-priced hospitals have argued that their prices are a result of providing complex care and state-of-the-art equipment, but the study cast doubt on such claims. On the other hand, most primary care physicians have little bargaining power because they tend to work in smaller organizations, the researchers found.
