Numerous clinics offer stem cell treatments for conditions such as lung disease and spinal cord injuries, but scientists have proven neither the efficacy nor safety of these treatments. Stem cell scientists worry that the marketing of unproven, unregulated products and treatments will undermine the legitimacy of their research. A statement from the International Society for Stem Cell Research says the nonscientific use of stem cells represents "a threat to patient welfare, patient autonomy and to the scientific process."
