Spending on generic medications among Americans was up 8% last year, accompanied by a drop of 20.7% for brand-name prescription drugs, according to a study by the Health Care Cost Institute and reported by USA Today. In May, a different study by the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics found that overall spending on medications by Americans fell to $325.8 billion last year from $329.2 billion in 2011.
