The National Guard units of Texas and Mississippi are refusing to process certain benefits claims for same-sex couples, despite a directive from the Pentagon mandating equal treatment for all marriages. John Nichols, commander of the Texas National Guard, said the DOD directive conflicts with state law, and a spokesman for the Mississippi National Guard said that only facilities in the state on federal property would be allowed to process benefits claims for same-sex spouses.
