The unadjusted one-year survival rates for heart transplant candidates on waiting lists were 73% for men and 70% for women, according to data presented at the annual meeting of the Heart Failure Society of America. But after accounting for age and other factors, women were at 10% greater risk of death or severe illness. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators and other ventricular assist devices may be underused among women, researchers found.
