Current and aspiring senior academic leaders must be mission-centered and focus on realistic priorities to be effective, asserts Michigan State University doctoral research assistant Michael Zeig. Good leaders build on the strengths of the institution and realize resources are limited, which means leaders must practice strategic thinking and open communication, Zeig writes in this commentary. "[T]rust is the currency of the job, and this requires developing a team of vice presidents and executives who will be honest and open both with the president and with each other," he notes.
