TV networks still go after the 18-to-49 demographic, but that isn't a growing audience, and it's not the majority of the audience either, Scott Collins writes. As younger viewers embrace content alternatives such as Netflix, the median age of ABC, CBS and NBC viewers has moved "well over 50," Collins writes. "Broadcasters may have to go back to valuing total audiences over how many affluent 20-somethings they managed to reach. ... [T]hese networks are now making programming decisions based on the presumed preferences of a minority of their audience."
