Researchers looked at the brain scans of 108 children with normal brain development and found that myelin distribution was fixed by age 4, suggesting that any environmental factors affecting brain development will be strongest at a very early age. The study, which appears in The Journal of Neuroscience, indicates that early-intervention services for children with delayed language attainment should be started before age 4, lead author, Jonathan O'Muircheartaigh, said.
