Wood County, W.Va., has proposed a new policy for dispatching ambulances to clear up confusion about availability and response times. 9-1-1 director Randy Lowe said a special alert tone will be issued when no ambulances are available such as when they are all being used on routine patient transfers. If an emergency medical call comes in during that time, "we send out a second alert tone and tell them what the call is, and the ambulance service can divert from their current call to handle the medical call," Lowe said.
