Prior to 1987, some Nevada casinos took a haphazard approach to getting rid of expired poker chips. One collector, Las Vegas gaming supplies store owner Mike Spinetti, has what some believe to be the largest collection of expired poker chips in the world. His have been fire-damaged, buried at the bottom of Lake Mead, and picked up by chance at estate sales. In 1987, the state regulated disposal of expired chips through Regulation 12; chips now must be destroyed by an approved disposal company.
