Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods is expected to force the grocery business to face the world of e-commerce more directly, which Amazon had already been testing with its Amazon Go store. Amazon "asked the question, 'How do you remove the checkout entirely,' which has massive benefits, both on the labor task -- 30 percent of the labor task in store -- and also it's one of the top pain points in the shopping experience of the customers," says Louise Herring of McKinsey.
