The term "plant-based diet" can be confusing, and some people think it is code for vegan, but research tends to define it as vegetarian, writes registered dietitian nutritionist Carrie Dennett. In practical terms, plant-based eating can be vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian or omnivore, but the bottom line, Dennett writes, is that plant-based foods dominate the plate, and any animal-derived foods have a supporting role.
