I recently reached out to three Washington, D.C., pastry chefs, who had some traditional and creative ideas for a wedding cake that would be perfect for this Friday’s marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton. I polled Restaurant SmartBrief readers to see which option was their favorite.

1789 Restaurant‘s pastry chef Mallory Staley took first place with her seven-tier cake, with white fondant with royal blue satin ribbon around each tier. Cascading pearls and fresh tulips from the Queen’s garden also would adorn the cake.

Separately from the Restaurant SmartBrief poll, I reached out to fine-dining chef Todd Gray of Equinox and the newly opened Watershed and asked what he would serve to the royal couple. His proposed menu: Stuffed Saddle of Rabbit with a Mousse of Wild Mushroom, Braised Leeks and Truffled Rabbit Jus.

Restaurants in the nation’s capital also are hosting viewing parties and breakfasts, including early-Friday festivities at the Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C., Reynolds Tavern, Union Jack’s and The Queen Vic.
